State-Level Neonatal NIV workshop held at SUM Hospital

Forty six doctors and nurses from different district headquarter hospitals in Odisha attended a state-level Neonatal Non-invasive Ventilation workshop which was held at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital (IMSSH) here on Saturday.

Different basic use and utilization of various Non-invasive Ventilation (NIV) techniques including Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) and Non-invasive Positive Pressure Ventilation (NIPPV) were discussed in the workshop which was organised by the hospital’s Department of Neonatology in association with the National Health Mission (NHM), National Neonatology Forum (NNF), Odisha, and UNICEF.

Dr. Debasish Nanda, Professor in the Department of Neonatology, was the Coordinator for the workshop.

The resource persons, besides Dr. Nanda, included Dr. Tapas Som, Professor in the Department of Neonatology, AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, Dr. Pankaj Mohanty, Professor, AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, Dr. Santosh Panda, Professor, Department of Neonatology, KIMS, Dr. Ratan Kumar Das, Professor, Department of Neonatology, IMSSH and Dr. Vijay Kumar, Associate Professor, Department of Neonatology, IMSSH.

Dr. Alok Swain, President, NNF, Odisha, Dr. Brajesh Raj Mehta, Health Officer, UNICEF, Dr. Prativa Pradhan, Joint Director, Child Health and Dr. Anindita Pattnaik, Consultant, Child Health also attended the workshop. Prof. (Dr.) Sanghamitra Mishra, Dean, IMSSH and Prof. (Dr.) Pusparaj Samantasinghar, Medical Superintendent of the hospital, who graced the inaugural ceremony, underlined the need for holding such workshops to reduce neonatal mortality in the state.
